Wat'Chee Lodge

Wat'Chee means:a hill covered with trees in the middle of the tundra(Cree language). The building is a former naval base but now serves as a base camp for photographing Mother and baby Polar bears as it sits near the denning areas.

There is no running water but other than that it is quite tolerable place to stay. The food is excellent. This is not the Hilton but considering the logistics of bring in food/water/etc; it is a very warm place to stay.

These are casual shots- I made no effort in terms of composition. I just want to convey what to expect if you are considering coming.

  • the cold room: where the overstocked food is kept and where photographers can store their gear in.<br /> <br /> Update: no longer a cold room; just a storage room.
  • hallway to the toilets; the outhouse style one is where the door is located. The toilet seat is detached( loose ) which adds to the Wat'Chee adventure!<br /> The compose toilet is located next to the upside down bucket.
  • compost toilet; somebody forgot to put the lid down.
  • compost; you add a scoop after finishing your business. It helps retain moisture and decomposition. Plus, the compost 'hides' your poop so you do not gross out the next person.

  • use this small pan to get the hot water. you pour into the bigger pan. Then, you add cold water to make the temp more reasonable to wash your yourself.<br /> Yes, that is a bottle of Skin Braser; what is next? Hai Karate

  • family room where you can watch TV and socialize. Or you can bury yourself in your laptop and not socialize. There is Wi-Fi but it is not very reliable
