Gray Whales(Eschrichtius robustus), Monterey Bay
These whales migrate from Alaska to Baja California around November. After having their calves, they migrate back up. The whales tend to hung the shore knowing that the killer whales do not like shallow waters but once they reach the Monterey Bay, the whales cross the deep waters. And, the killer whales are waiting. So far, I have not been able to photograph the attacks but from what I heard- it is pretty sad. The killer whales will go after the calves They do it by "sitting" on top to drown the calf. One mother desperately tried to carry her young on her back to avoid the killer whales. This tactic did not work.
