Falklands,UK

Also known as the Malvinas. Very cold, windy place- I have spent two weeks there- Sea Lion, Sanders,Pebble, and East Falkland islands. I came back and visited Bleaker for three hours during my Antarctica trip. The whole place is covered with dried bird poop. I really do not know why anybody wants to live there- too cold and harsh. The national pastime is gossiping. From what I heard, it is pretty bad.
If Antarctica is too expensive, try this place. You can ask me questions or contact: http://www.falklandstravel.com and ask for Sally. This gallery is complete

This is a typical plane used to fly from one island to another which can land on grass/dirt runways. You read about the Falkland's national pastime. Around 7-7:30pm, Falkland's only radio station will broadcast who is going where on these little planes.

  • Saunders Island: this is what a "camp" or "settlement" looks like. The owners of the island live here plus they can accommodate guests
  • Do you see the tiny looking cabin on the side of the hill? I stayed in that piece of junk for three nights. It was cold, cold and very cold. The cabin has one small heater and one on-demand water heater which worked half the time. There are four bunk beds located at both ends with the kitchen/dining area in between. The lights are powered by a car battery which is re-charged by solar panels. You are paying the big bucks for the location- period
  • This is why the place is called, "The Neck."
  • Magellanic penguin vs Sea Lion- what a mis-match. Sea lion( Oturia flavescens); Saunders Island
  • The Neck at Saunders Island, Falklands: Paul S. a freelance photographer from the East Coast. USA is on the left. I am on the right(blue). Here, we were searching for the killer Sea Lion after the first kill. Once Paul left for the settlement, Reinhard and I witnessed three more killings.<br />
Big thanks for Reinhard Mischke for taking this picture. Reinhard is a professor of Veterinary Medicine and an accomplished photographer. You can see his work here: <a href="http://mischke-naturfoto.com/phtm/person.php">http://mischke-naturfoto.com/phtm/person.php</a><br />
I must apologize for the quality of this image because I lost the original file so I had to scan a 4x6 print to produce this on my site.
