Falklands,UK

Also known as the Malvinas. Very cold, windy place- I have spent two weeks there- Sea Lion, Sanders,Pebble, and East Falkland islands. I came back and visited Bleaker for three hours during my Antarctica trip. The whole place is covered with dried bird poop. I really do not know why anybody wants to live there- too cold and harsh. The national pastime is gossiping. From what I heard, it is pretty bad.

  • Magellanic Penguin(jackass); Spheniscus magellanicus
  • He knew the picture was cropped so he bent over a bit.

  • Southern Giant Petrel( Macronestes giganteus) locally known as Stinker
  • Upland Goose( Chloephaga picta leucoptera); These birds are very common.

  • Crested Caracara( Polyborus plancus plancus ); locally known as Carancho; as oppose to the Straited, this is a very shy bird; I was lucky to get this shot.

  • Sea Lion Island: eastern part of the island. Rockhopper colony. I was dropped here by a jeep in the rain and wind. I stood there- asking myself' "Why did I do this." Fortunately, the weather got better and I had a better attitude about this place.
  • Falklands Skua ( Catharacta antarctica ) vs one King Cormorant and a bunch of Rockhoppers. As a group, they can fend off the Skua. The cormorant is the one with the long neck- almost face to face with the Skua.
