  • This is an odd shot because of the sea lions. Normally, you see the birds along with the whales. For whatever reason this year, the sea lions are hanging around with the whales. I have been doing whale watching for at least twenty years and I have never seen sea lions along with whales. I talked to the naturalist on the boat and she concurred. When the whale dives, the sea lions dives. But, the whale can hold their breath a lot longer that the sea lions. Just before the whale surfaces, the sea lions will surface as a group. What is happening underwater is unknown; that is the million dollar question.
